Burton IdiomIs My backup solution adequate?

Have you ever had a question about anything labeled "IT" and someone asked you to believe "IT savvy" an answer, and after hearing the answer that you felt as confused? If you have, welcome to my club. The computer world has become a country with its own language and jargon, and even his own jokes. This article is not written in ITish (the spit IT) and not idioms that only Itani (citizens of the world IT) understand. Well ... is the goal at least.

Is My backup solution adequate?

One of my pet peeves key is when someone who is considered an expert in their field is a statistic on the ground, and because it is an "expert", he is presumed to be done. The fact is that statistics was made locally and not fact. Some of you may have heard the statistic that said that 80-93% of businesses close their doors 2 years after the catastrophic loss of data. This could scare you into buying a more expensive box with lights on, but what should really determine whether or not you need to fork over more dough for a better backup solution are a few simple questions, not not a statistic made.

The first question is that my current backup solution? Backup solutions are now commonplace in business. However, if you ask the owners or managers if they could recover the data if the need arises, many would say is a matter of crossing your fingers and hope it works. This is not an adequate solution to backup. You must be sure that it works and take action if it does not.

There are some things we can do to check to see if it works or not. We can check the backup log (No this is not ITish is as simple as a newspaper journal of Captain James T. Kirk on the Enterprise used. This is a simple recording of actions such as whether or not backup is happening and when, with errors that might have occurred). If the log said the backup that happens and no error occurred, then all you have to do is to try to retrieve archived data. This may require using a Itan, but it should not be expensive, because everything you try to do is access to random data to ensure it is saved correctly.

It's always a good idea (and the value of money in excess) to find a backup solution that notifies you whenever a backup occurs and each time it does not work. If you put the weight of the future existence of your company on the shoulders of a small box, you better know he does his job. Make sure your backup software alerts you when there is a backup and when there is an error.

Remember, if you want to save to work correctly, you should check regularly to ensure it works correctly. This is the man so he does not 100%, 100% of the time (Yes, yes it is a statistic and I just do it, but it seems about right, huh?) .

So, after test your backup, two things can happen, it does or does not work. If it works, great! Give yourself a pat on the back and keep reading. If not, it's now your turn to act as a Itan or call a real order to understand why this does not work. Do not jump to the conclusion that you need a new backup if your current contract does not work. Sometimes there are minor issues that once resolved to permit the backup function like you can expect.

The next step is to determine if the backup is to give you access you need. This is a little self-reflection comes in. First, ask yourself "is the info I'm just the backup in case of catastrophic system failure, or do I get it often?" If you just save your data in accordance with the rules of the all-knowing people on Capitol Hill, then most likely you do not need to access data very often.
