Cannondale ClothingWhat road bike first?

I'm 6'0''160 pounds. Looking to get a bike mainly to ride about 5 miles to work and back. I do not really need to do anything to work, except my clothes in a backpack so I do not necessarily want to go with a bicycle commuter. I'll probably start riding evenutually more serious longer distances. I'm looking to spend $ 700 or less. This will essentially be riding the city if the roads are not perfect. I can get wider tires. I want to get one used if I can so I would like some recommendations on some older models of 2-3 years. Trek, Giant, Specialized, Cannondale, Felt, Lemond few I saw on craigslist in my price range. Should I maybe go with Cyclo-cross instead of a road bike?

Personally, I love getting used bikes. With a budget of $ 700.00, you should be able to find 2-3 year old bike that originally cost between $ 1,500 and $ 2,000.

For a commuter, I think it is important to be able to mount the wings and the media. Fenders will keep you clean and dry during the trip. Personally, I hate to wear a backpack when riding. It is hot and the additional weight because of the discomfort of the saddle. I turn a lot longer, however. So this is not your affair.

Whatever your bike, I would tire of commuting on the bike. They have rubber a little thicker and more durable than race tires. They can be much wider than road tires.

Bike racing has geometry close to that feel alive, even agitated. A racing bike will not have mounts for fenders or racks. If you never intend to put the fenders or racks on the bike, a bike and you like lively, you should be good to go. Many runners regularly sell old bikes to fund new purchases if you might be able to get a good deal. A carbon frame used must be of your price range, but I stay away from them anyway.

Touring bikes have relaxed geometry make them feel very stable. Plus they have mounts for racks and fenders.

A cyclocross bike is essentially a road bike on which you can mount larger tires for off-road. Unless you intend to go off pavement you probably will not need such wide tires. I regularly use my cyclocross bike on the road and he did great. One good thing about cyclocross bikes is large fender and door-holders.

There are many great bike manufacturers you list. You should also take a look at some bikes from companies like Orbea and Bianchi.

Hope this helps.

It's a good idea to go with a used bike. Start by going to your local bike shops and ask them if they have taken something in trade. Your best bet is to buy a bike that has been verified by a qualified technician. Do not buy a bike without a test ride to ensure it fits. A bike that fits is a pleasure and a joy to ride. A bike that fits poorly torture.

Do not linger on brand names. If the original price of the bike is $ 1,000 or up, then competition in the market is working well for you. Any two bikes at the same price are very likely to be cash equivalents. All the names you listed are good brands. There are many others, too.

For a $ 700 used bike, I expect to see at least Shimano 105 components. I prefer Ultegra. Do not worry about the conditions of the tires or brake pads. Replace them anyway. Check the chain for a better elasticity. If the string is stretched by less than 1 / 16 inch per foot, then it must be replaced, not a bad thing. If the chain stretch

All sports would work for cycling trips as well as longer rides. the brand isn't all that matters. all names on the frame means is that built the frame. They all use basically the same components in a range, usually on bicycles shimano bottom line. I want to avoid is to find a race bike with what you do. I suspect that if you shop.
