Business Casual Did you know any fashionable casual business was started by an oil crisis? It's true. Back in the '70s, we went into one of the first real shortages of oil and OPEC has become a household name. The government as part of its response to the shortage has asked all companies to adjust the thermostat in their air conditioned workspaces to reduce electricity and save on oil fired power plants.
You probably already know that the suit and tie are not really designed to be worn in an environment at 80 degrees. So note down management means that the formal dress is not required during the crisis and domestic air conditioning business casual fashion was born.
This memo in the 70's generally defined as business casual setting that was not acceptable rather than what was. Pantyhose should still be worn by women. Jeans, T-shirts, sandals, shorts, and basically anything that inappropriate management has been specifically prohibited. As a result, business casual meant no jacket and no tie for men and it does not mean much more for women.
When the crisis has passed so did the business casual attire for everyday. Replacing it was "Casual Friday" a trick of human resources so that everyone feels comfortable in the company just before the weekend. And then something happened. The fashion industry felt a new market and began promoting the idea that companies were cutting edge and hip, like two hot new stocks Microsoft and Apple, including the value of letting their employees have some freedom in dress rather than conform to the uniform of the company.
Today, 43% of all businesses have a relaxed dress code.
Although each agency establishes its own idea of what is casual, often their policies contain a common ground. The counseling office job at the American University defines Business Casual as halfway between formal businesses and street wear. They give their graduates looking for a job this focus on what is and is not business casual.
For women it is a skirt or a dress informal as the appropriate length (no minimum). The skirt can be topped with a shirt, polo shirt, sweater or sweater set. Pants are ok as they are full length and not denim. For men it's a collared shirt, slacks, belt and shoes with socks. The shirt must be tucked into pants and jeans can be.
Now understand that the American University is located near Embassy Row in Washington DC so that their idea of casual is a little more formal than that of firms in Los Angeles. The bottom line is the company set the standard, but in almost all cases, regardless of the restrictions at work in casual dress is so much nicer than the dress. Thank you for OPEC.
