HyventWalking and Outdoor Clothing Advice - Choosing and Using your Outdoor Gear!

Walking and board Outerwear: The layering system

When walking, hiking, mountaineering, rock climbing or mountain biking, etc., it is very important to wear clothing designed to protect you against the elements. Not only correct the clothes you are comfortable and enjoy your activity, it could, in extreme conditions and will, save your life.

The layering system is an effective way to ensure that you maintain a comfortable body temperature during and after exercise, whatever the weather. The system employs superposition of three basic layers are: Outer layer - waterproof to protect you form wind, rain and snow, the middle layer - to provide insulation and keep you warm, and the base layer - to provide insulation and wick sweat away from your skin.

Not only does each layer has its own function in the multilayer system, but the air is also trapped between each layer. The air between the layers keeps you warmer than if you were to wear a heavy coat. The stratification system is very flexible. If you're hot, you can remove a layer. If you're cold, you can add a layer. For example, you can use more than one intermediate layer to help keep you warm.

For the best comfort of all layers must be permeable to air or lock capabilities. If one of your layers is not permeable to air-lock and then the breathing / wicking properties of other layers will not be as effective.

Before going on a walk, shipping or other outdoor activities, it is important to reflect on the type of clothes you'll need to take with you. Some things to consider are: How long are you going out? The more you are away, the less you'll be able to predict what the weather. You must be prepared for good weather and bad.

When and where will you walk? During the winter in Scotland you do not need a pair of shorts for walking, but you will certainly need good quality waterproofs. When hiking in a hot summers day in Spain, you're probably not need five fleece jackets.

How high you go? It can be hot and sunny in the valley, but you start to climb quickly the weather can be cold and unpredictable. In the mountain wind, rain and snow can come from nowhere.

What will you do after your exercise / Where will you stay? You can be plenty warm while you make your outdoor activity, but once you stop, you can become very cold. This is especially true if, after a hard day of hiking, you must wait for a train back, or if you are camping overnight.

You may also need other more technical or specialized clothing for your activity, for example, if you will be climbing your clothing should not restrict your movement, or if you are cycling, it is to have the upper advantagous with extra long sleeves and back. It is always wise to take adequate clothing to protect against the elements, but keep in mind that you'll have to make these clothes while you are not wearing them. A good tip is to always take another layer that you think you need. This rule of thumb usually ensures that you will be well protected and warm, but you do not end up carrying around clothes you do not need.

Do not forget your extremities. In the cold, windy conditions with rain or snow, you'll be glad you remember your gloves and a hat!
